Trade-A-Plate Transfer Process

How transfers are facilitated through our platform for Florida plates.

Florida does not allow direct plate transfers. Instead, the seller releases the plate and the buyer requests it through the DMV's vanity plate application process. After release, the plate must go through an administrative review before it becomes available for reissuance.

  1. 1Payment is held securely in escrow by Trade-A-Plate until the transfer is complete.
  2. 2The seller visits the DMV to release (surrender) the vanity plate from their vehicle registration. The seller receives standard replacement plates for their vehicle.
  3. 3Once the plate is released and available, the buyer submits a vanity plate application at the DMV requesting the specific plate combination.
  4. 4The buyer pays the DMV's vanity plate application fee and any associated registration fees.
  5. 5The DMV processes the application and issues the vanity plate to the buyer.
  6. 6The buyer mounts the plate on their registered vehicle.
  7. 7Both buyer and seller confirm the completed transfer on Trade-A-Plate.
  8. 8After both confirmations, escrowed funds are released to the seller (minus the platform fee).

Note: There is a risk that the DMV may not reissue the plate (e.g., if it is flagged or another party requests it first). If the transfer cannot be completed, either party may open a dispute for resolution.
