Transfer Process
In Alaska, vanity plates follow the vehicle — they cannot be transferred separately. To transfer a plate, the buyer must purchase the vehicle it is registered to, then re-register the plate to a new vehicle if desired.
- Payment is held securely in escrow by Trade-A-Plate until the transfer is complete.
- The seller and buyer agree on vehicle sale terms privately. The Trade-A-Plate transaction covers only the plate value — the vehicle sale is handled separately.
- The seller transfers vehicle ownership to the buyer through the DMV, which includes the vanity plate since it stays with the vehicle.
- The buyer completes the vehicle title transfer and registration at the DMV, receiving the vanity plate as part of the vehicle transfer.
- If the buyer wants the plate on a different vehicle, they visit the DMV to transfer the plate to their preferred vehicle and obtain new standard plates for the purchased vehicle.
- Both buyer and seller confirm the completed transfer on Trade-A-Plate.
- After both confirmations, escrowed funds are released to the seller (minus the platform fee).
This process involves a vehicle sale in addition to the plate transfer. Trade-A-Plate escrow covers only the plate value. If any issues arise, either party may open a dispute.
